Committed to Making Language Learning
Exciting & Enjoyable!
About Me
Kim Dalrymple (Shū Lán 舒岚)
Since childhood, I was always fascinated by foreign languages, so it was natural for me to major in German while an undergraduate at Indiana University. Not content with only one different way to communicate, I began to learn Chinese at the same time, and presto! My future life course got under way!
After graduating, I went to Taiwan to sharpen my language skills and promptly fell in love with the people and their way of life. That’s why I lived in Taiwan and China for the next seven years, learning Chinese and teaching English to university and post-university students.
Following my return to the States, I studied for an M.A. in Chinese literature at the University of Michigan. But when I received my degree, I discovered language teaching was my real passion, so I embarked on my next adventure (which lasted nineteen years): teaching Chinese to adult learners at two community colleges.
I had so much fun in my classes that I decided to write a textbook, called Dancing with Dragons: Leap into the Chinese Language! I recently completed it and now enthusiastically use it with my students because it closely follows the way I teach.
Just as I do in the classroom, Dancing with Dragons shows learners how to carry out everyday tasks, such as greeting people or ordering dishes in a restaurant. It also clearly and animatedly explains culture, grammar, and pronunciation. Plus, it offers scores of upbeat practice activities. Using my textbook, learners should reach their language goals faster than ever and have fun to boot!
Currently, what I most enjoy is using my experiences in learning, teaching, and writing to help my students discover the same happiness and fulfillment I have found from embracing such a beautiful language as Chinese.
When I’m not teaching, I love to listen to audiobooks and podcasts, learn Chinese idioms and pop songs, and watch Chinese TV dramas. I also like to visit local Chinese restaurants to savor the delectable dishes there -- and drink Bubble Tea (Zhēn-zhū Nǎi-chá 珍珠奶茶 🧋 !
